Trip Overview

The Amarnath Yatra is considered the most sacred pilgrimage in Hinduism for devotees of Lord Shiva. Nestled in a Himalayan cave at 3,888 metres in the Lidder Valley of Kashmir, the Amarnath shrine houses a naturally formed ice Shiva Lingam that waxes and wanes with the lunar cycle — appearing fullest at Purnima and smallest at Amavasya. Ancient Hindu scriptures including the Skanda Purana mention Amarnath as the cave where Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to Goddess Parvati. The traditional Pahalgam route traverses 46 km over 4 days through some of the most spectacular Himalayan scenery in India. From Pahalgam (2,130 metres) the route ascends through Chandanwari (2,900 metres) — base camp for most yatris — Pissu Top, the sacred alpine Sheshnag Lake (3,590 metres) where the serpent god is said to reside, the challenging Mahagunas Pass (4,587 metres — the highest point), Panchtarni and finally the holy cave. Every step of this route has a story — where Shiva lost his necklace, where Parvati slept, where a pair of doves (said to be immortal) witnessed the Amar Katha and still reside. The Amarnath Yatra is conducted under the auspices of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board with mandatory online registration, health certificates and RFID wristbands. NorthYatra handles all logistics — Shrine Board registration assistance, base camp hotel at Pahalgam, ponies and porters coordination, camp stays en route and medical support guidance. The yatra typically runs from July to August with exact dates set annually by the Shrine Board based on the Hindu Panchang.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Amarnath Yatra take place each year?

The Amarnath Yatra typically runs from late June or July to August — exact dates are announced by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board each year based on the Hindu Panchang. Yatra 2025 ran for 38 days. Registration opens 3 to 4 months before the start date.

Is Shrine Board registration mandatory for Amarnath Yatra?

Yes, it is compulsory. All yatris must register on the official Shrine Board website at shriamarnathjishrine.com, undergo a medical fitness check and carry a valid health certificate (obtainable from designated government hospitals). An RFID wristband is issued on registration.

Is the Amarnath trek very difficult?

The Pahalgam route is 46 km over 4 days — moderate to difficult trekking. The highest point is Mahagunas Pass at 4,587 metres. Altitude sickness is a real risk. The Baltal route is 14 km one way and is doable in one day but is very steep and only suitable for fit trekkers.

Is helicopter available for Amarnath Yatra?

Yes, helicopter services operate from Baltal and Pahalgam side to Panchtarni (closest helipad to the cave — 2 km remaining trek). Helicopter is not included in this package but can be arranged. Book well in advance as demand is very high.

What medical fitness is required for Amarnath Yatra?

A health certificate is mandatory. Those with cardiac conditions, diabetes, high blood pressure or respiratory problems must consult their doctor and carry medication. Our trek guide carries a basic medical kit. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended.

What is the significance of the ice Shiva Lingam at Amarnath?

The ice Shiva Lingam forms naturally from dripping calcium-rich water and grows and shrinks with the lunar cycle. It is believed to represent Shiva's cosmic form. The dove pair residing in the cave is considered immortal — witnesses to the Amar Katha (secret of immortality) that Shiva narrated to Parvati here.

Is Amarnath Yatra safe?

The yatra is conducted under heavy security with the Indian Army, CRPF and state police providing cover throughout the route. Medical camps are stationed at regular intervals. NorthYatra only operates registered, legal yatra groups with experienced guides.
