Trip Overview

Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is far more than a transit hub — it is a fascinating city with colonial history, natural beauty and island character all concentrated within easy reach. For travellers with limited time or those who prefer not to take long inter-island ferries, a well-planned Port Blair itinerary can deliver the essential Andaman experience in just 4 days. The Cellular Jail — Kala Pani — is the undisputed centrepiece. Built by the British between 1896 and 1906, it housed India's most dangerous political prisoners in brutal solitary confinement. Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt and hundreds of other freedom fighters suffered here. The evening Sound and Light Show brings their stories to life with remarkable power. Ross Island (now officially Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island) was once the administrative headquarters of the British Andaman administration — a miniature empire with a cathedral, ballroom, tennis courts and printing press. Today it is abandoned and overgrown with enormous banyan tree roots that have swallowed the ruins whole. It is one of the most atmospheric places in all of India. North Bay Island has some of the best accessible coral in the region — visible through glass-bottom boats for non-swimmers or snorkels for the adventurous. Jolly Buoy Island (seasonal access, October to May) has exceptional snorkelling with colourful fish and pristine coral gardens. Corbyn's Cove is Port Blair's closest swimming beach. NorthYatra's Port Blair City Package is ideal for first-time Andaman visitors, families with elderly members, or travellers combining a short Andaman stopover with a larger India trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 4 days enough for Andaman?

4 days is enough to see Port Blair's highlights but does not include Havelock or Neil Island. If you have 6–7 days, we strongly recommend adding these islands (see our Havelock & Neil Island package). For a first visit or family trip with elderly members, the Port Blair City Package is a comfortable, complete experience.

What is the Sound and Light Show at Cellular Jail?

The Sound and Light Show (Swatantrata Ki Gatha) is a 45-minute dramatised narration of India's freedom struggle and the stories of prisoners held at Cellular Jail. It runs in Hindi (most evenings) and English (selected evenings) — check timing at booking. It is emotionally powerful and highly recommended.

Is Jolly Buoy Island accessible year-round?

No. Jolly Buoy Island is open from October 15 to May 15 (dry season). During monsoon (June to September), Redskin Island is used as the substitute snorkelling site. We arrange permits in advance.

What is the best way to reach Port Blair from mainland India?

By air only — there are no passenger ships from mainland India currently. Direct flights from Chennai (2 hrs), Kolkata (2 hrs) and Delhi (3 hrs, with stopover) operate daily. We help arrange flights at best available fares.

Can we extend the Port Blair package to include Havelock?

Yes — this 4-day package can be extended to 7 days by adding our Havelock and Neil Island segment. Contact NorthYatra to build a customised itinerary.
