Trip Overview

Dharamshala and its upper suburb McLeod Ganj occupy a singular place in India's travel landscape. Since 1960, when the 14th Dalai Lama established the Tibetan Government-in-Exile here after fleeing Tibet, this Kangra Valley hill town has developed a culture that blends Himachali mountain life with Tibetan Buddhist tradition in a way found nowhere else in the country. The result is a town where maroon-robed monks debate scripture in monasteries, Israeli backpackers eat momos at wooden tables, Tibetan artisans hand-paint thangkas in cramped workshops, and international meditators attend silent retreats — all within the same few square kilometres. The Tsuglagkhang Complex (Dalai Lama Temple Complex) is the spiritual heart of McLeod Ganj — a cluster of Tibetan Buddhist temples, a museum of Tibetan history and culture, the Namgyal Monastery (the personal monastery of the Dalai Lama), and the Kalachakra Temple with its intricate murals and statues. On days when teachings are scheduled and open to the public, the atmosphere here is deeply moving. Bhagsu Nag, 2 km from McLeod Ganj, is home to the Bhagsu Nag Temple (dedicated to the serpent god) and the Bhagsu Waterfall — a beautiful two-tier waterfall that tumbles down through a rocky gorge into a pool. The walk from McLeod Ganj to the waterfall along a boulder-strewn stream is one of the best short walks in Himachal. Triund, the celebrated 9 km trek from McLeod Ganj through rhododendron and oak forests to a flat ridge at 2,875 metres with sweeping views of the Dhauladhar range on one side and the Kangra Valley on the other, is one of Himachal's finest day treks — accessible to beginners and rewarding for experienced trekkers alike. Dharamshala also has the HPCA Cricket Stadium — a world-famous cricket ground at 1,457 metres considered one of the most scenic international cricket venues in the world. The nearby Chamunda Devi Temple — a revered Shakti Peeth 15 km from Dharamshala — and the Palampur Tea Gardens (30 km) are excellent half-day excursions.
