Trip Overview

The Kullu Valley and Parvati Valley together form one of Himachal Pradesh's most diverse and rewarding destinations — where Hindu and Sikh pilgrimage sites, natural hot springs, Himalayan treks and vibrant backpacker culture coexist in a compact, accessible stretch of the Beas and Parvati rivers. Manikaran, 45 km from Kullu at 1760 m, is among the most extraordinary places in Himachal Pradesh. The Sikh Gurdwara Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is famous for its geothermal hot springs — so hot that rice and dal are cooked in them as prasad distributed to thousands of pilgrims daily. Adjacent Hindu temples dedicated to Shiva, Rama and Vishnu dot the riverfront. The natural spring water, believed to cure skin diseases, draws both pilgrims and tourists in equal numbers. The setting — gorge walls rising sharply, the Parvati River roaring below, the smell of sulphur mingling with incense — is unforgettable. Bijli Mahadev Temple, perched at 2,460 m on a hilltop above Kullu with a commanding 360-degree view of the entire valley, is one of the most dramatic Shiva temples in Himachal. The temple's Shivalinga is famous for being struck by lightning every year — shattered, then reassembled with gram flour and butter by the priest as a symbol of divine acceptance. The 2-km trek to the temple through oak and rhododendron forests is rewarding. Kasol, 35 km from Bhuntar, has become one of North India's most visited backpacker destinations — famous for its Israeli and European traveller community, trout-filled Parvati River, good cafes and as the trailhead for treks to Kheerganga and Sar Pass. NorthYatra's Kullu Manikaran Package combines the spiritual, the natural and the contemporary into a perfect 4-day Himachal itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Manikaran special?

Manikaran is one of only a few places in the world with geothermal springs hot enough to cook food (90°C+). The Sikh Gurdwara cooks all its langar (free community meal) using the spring water — rice, dal and vegetables are boiled in the natural hot pools. The springs are also believed to have healing properties for skin conditions. The setting in a narrow gorge with the Parvati River is uniquely dramatic.

Is the Bijli Mahadev trek difficult?

The trek to Bijli Mahadev is about 2 km from the road (one way) through forest and is a moderate gradient. It takes about 45–60 minutes one way. Comfortable shoes are sufficient — no trekking gear needed. The views from the top are among the best in the Kullu Valley.

What is Kasol famous for?

Kasol is the most popular backpacker destination in Himachal Pradesh — known for its Israeli cafes (menus in Hebrew, hummus and shakshuka), the Parvati River, and as the trailhead for the famous Kheerganga trek (12 km, hot springs at the top) and Sar Pass trek (advanced).

Can we do river rafting in Kullu?

Yes — Kullu is one of India's premier river rafting destinations on the Beas River. Rafting stretches from Pirdi to Jhiri (14 km Grade III) and from Bajaura to Pirdi (16 km Grade III-IV). Rafting can be arranged as a half-day add-on at an additional cost — inform us at booking.

What is the temperature in Kullu-Kasol in winter?

December to February: Kullu town 2–12°C, Kasol can go below 0°C at night with occasional snowfall. The Parvati Valley roads remain open. March to May: pleasant 10–22°C. June to September: 15–25°C but monsoon rains. October to November: ideal — clear skies, 5–18°C.
