Trip Overview

Manali, nestled at 2,050 metres in the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, is one of India's most beloved hill stations — a place where the Beas River roars through pine and deodar forests, where snow-capped peaks are visible from the main street, and where adventure and tranquillity exist side by side in perfect balance. The town draws honeymooners, trekkers, backpackers, families and adventure seekers in equal measure — and delivers something unique to each. The star attraction of Manali is undoubtedly Solang Valley, located 14 km north of the town. In winter (November to February), Solang transforms into a world of white — snow activities like skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and snowmobile rides draw thousands. In summer and monsoon season the valley offers zorbing, paragliding, ATV rides and ropeway experiences against the backdrop of the Pir Panjal range. Rohtang Pass at 3,978 metres is the dramatic crown of any Manali trip — a high mountain pass on the main Manali-Leh Highway that serves as the gateway to Lahaul and Spiti. On clear days, the view from Rohtang is one of the most panoramic in the Indian Himalayas — glaciers, snowfields and rocky peaks in every direction. The NGT restricts the number of vehicles daily, so permits are arranged in advance by NorthYatra. Hadimba Devi Temple — built in 1553 AD within a dense cedar forest — is Manali's most sacred and most photographed heritage site. The four-storey pagoda-style temple is dedicated to Goddess Hadimba, the wife of Bhima from the Mahabharata, and is surrounded by a peaceful grove of ancient trees. Vashisht village, 3 km from Manali, has natural sulphur hot springs housed in stone bathhouses that have been visited by pilgrims and travellers for centuries. Old Manali, across the Manalsu stream, is a cluster of traditional Himachali houses and flat-roofed cafes where Israeli and European backpackers mix with local shepherds — a uniquely charming neighbourhood to wander through on an afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit Manali?

October to February for snow sports and a snow-covered landscape. April to June for green meadows, pleasant weather and Rohtang Pass open. September for post-monsoon lush greenery. July to August is peak tourist season but also monsoon season with occasional road blocks.

Is Rohtang Pass always accessible?

Rohtang Pass is open approximately May to November. Heavy snowfall October onwards and monsoon rains July to August can cause closures. NGT restricts the number of vehicles daily — permits must be arranged in advance (we do this). The Atal Tunnel to Sissu in Lahaul is an alternative all-year round.

How far is Solang Valley from Manali?

Solang Valley is 14 km from Manali town — approximately 30 to 40 minutes by car.

What adventure activities are available at Solang Valley?

Winter (November to February): skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, snowmobile, snow scooter. Summer (April to October): zorbing, ATV quad bikes, ropeway, paragliding. All activities are charged on the spot and are not included in the package price.

Is Manali accessible by flight?

The nearest airport is Kullu-Manali Airport (Bhuntar) at 50 km from Manali with limited flights from Delhi. Most visitors reach Manali by overnight Volvo bus from Delhi (14 hrs) or private cab from Chandigarh (7 hrs) or Delhi (12 hrs).

What is Vashisht famous for?

Vashisht is famous for its natural sulphur hot springs — one of the few natural hot springs in Himachal Pradesh. The water is channelled into traditional stone bath houses, separately for men and women. The springs are believed to have healing properties.

Can we extend the Manali trip to Kasol or Spiti?

Yes. Kasol in Parvati Valley is 4 hours from Manali and can be added as a 1 to 2 day extension. Spiti Valley is a full 8 to 10 day adventure from Manali. Contact NorthYatra for customised extensions.
