The Land of Krishna — Temples, Raas, and Divine Grace

Destination

Uttar Pradesh

Available

Year-round

Starting from

Trip Overview

The district of Mathura-Vrindavan in western Uttar Pradesh is the beating heart of Vaishnava Hinduism — the land where Lord Krishna was born, where he grew up tending cows in the forests of Vrindavan, and where the eternal play of divine love (Raas Lila) unfolded. For devotees of Krishna from across India and the world — particularly the ISKCON community and Vaishnava pilgrims — this is the holiest ground on earth. Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The Krishna Janmabhoomi temple complex marks the exact prison cell where Vasudeva and Devaki were held by the demon king Kansa when Krishna was born at midnight. Just 12 km away is Vrindavan — the forest town where Krishna spent his youth, now transformed into a town of over 5,000 temples. The Banke Bihari Temple, famous for the mesmerizing 'Thakur ji' idol and the tradition of covering the deity with a curtain to protect devotees from the intensity of his gaze, is Vrindavan's most beloved shrine. The ISKCON temple (Chandrodyaya Mandir) offers a spectacular evening aarti open to all. The Yamuna River flows through both cities, and the ghats of Mathura — particularly the Vishram Ghat where Krishna rested after slaying Kansa — are the site of the most moving evening lamp ritual. The entire area breathes devotion, and even non-religious visitors are often moved by the intensity of faith they witness here.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Arrive Mathura — Janmabhoomi & Yamuna Aarti

Arrive at Mathura Railway Station. Transfer to hotel. Morning: visit Krishna Janmabhoomi — the prison cell-shrine marking Lord Krishna's exact birthplace. See the adjacent Keshava Deo Temple. Afternoon: visit Dwarkadhish Temple — one of Mathura's grandest temples, famous for its painted facade and lively aarti. Evening: Vishram Ghat evening aarti — priests light earthen lamps on the sacred Yamuna where Krishna rested after slaying Kansa. The scene is extraordinarily devotional. Overnight in Mathura/Vrindavan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of Mathura and Vrindavan?

Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna — one of the most beloved deities in Hinduism. Vrindavan, 12 km away, is where Krishna spent his childhood and youth, and where his Raas Lila (divine dance with the gopis) took place. Together, the Mathura-Vrindavan region is called Braj Bhumi — considered as sacred as Vrindavan in the divine realm (Goloka).

What is the best time to visit Mathura-Vrindavan?

Janmashtami (Krishna's birthday, usually in August) is the most spectacular time — massive celebrations with midnight rituals, music, and lakhs of devotees. Holi in Vrindavan (especially Lathmar Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon, 10 days before the main Holi) is world-famous. October–March is the most comfortable season for a peaceful pilgrimage.

What is special about the Banke Bihari Temple?

The Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan houses the idol of Thakur ji — Krishna in the triply bent (Tribhanga) pose. The temple has a unique tradition of closing the curtain (parda) every few seconds during darshan — a practice said to protect devotees from the overwhelming divine energy of the deity's gaze. No conch is blown or aarti lamp waved here.

How far is Mathura from Delhi and Agra?

Mathura is 145 km from Delhi (2 hours by road/Shatabdi Express) and only 55 km from Agra (1 hour). It's ideally combined with an Agra Taj Mahal tour — both can be done in a 4–5 day UP heritage and spiritual tour. NorthYatra offers combined Agra + Mathura-Vrindavan packages.

Is ISKCON Vrindavan open to non-devotees?

Yes! The ISKCON Chandrodyaya Mandir (Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir) in Vrindavan is open to all faiths. The marble temple is beautifully constructed, and the evening aarti is a moving experience open to everyone. The temple complex also has a restaurant serving pure vegetarian food.

What to buy in Mathura-Vrindavan?

Buy: panchajanya (conch shells), tulsi malas and rudraksha rosaries, sandalwood items, Mathura's famous pedas (milk-based sweets — the best in India), Braj Chaurasi parikrama books, small Krishna idols, and traditional Braj cloth items. The markets near Krishna Janmabhoomi and Banke Bihari Temple are the best shopping areas.

Can I combine Mathura-Vrindavan with Agra?

Absolutely — this is one of UP's most popular combinations. Mathura is only 55 km from Agra, making a combined 4-day trip very easy: Day 1–2 Agra (Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri) + Day 3–4 Mathura-Vrindavan. NorthYatra offers a combined Agra-Mathura package at special rates.
