Trip Overview

Pushkar is one of the most sacred and unique towns in all of India — a small desert oasis built around the holy Pushkar Lake, whose 52 ghats are flanked by over 400 temples. The town holds the world's only Brahma Temple (the creator god rarely worshipped elsewhere in India), and a dip in Pushkar Lake is believed to cleanse all sins and grant moksha. Pushkar has a timeless, otherworldly atmosphere — a blend of Hindu pilgrimage, desert camel culture and a vibrant international backpacker scene, all co-existing in extraordinary harmony. The Pushkar Camel Fair held each November is one of the world's most spectacular festivals, attracting over 200,000 visitors and 50,000 camels to the desert outside town. The rose gardens produce India's finest rose attar (perfume). NorthYatra's Pushkar package combines the spiritual experience with the town's unique cultural richness.

When is the Pushkar Camel Fair?

The Pushkar Camel Fair is held in the Hindu month of Kartik (October-November) each year, usually around 5 days before and after the Kartik Purnima full moon. It is one of the world's largest livestock fairs and a spectacular cultural event.

Is Pushkar suitable for non-Hindus?

Yes, Pushkar welcomes visitors of all faiths. The Brahma Temple, lake ghats and the general spiritual atmosphere are open to all. Some inner sanctums require simple dress code compliance.

How far is Pushkar from Jaipur?

Pushkar is approximately 145 km from Jaipur (2.5 hours by road). It is often combined with Jaipur and Ajmer as a 2-day excursion or as part of a larger Rajasthan circuit.

What is the holy significance of Pushkar Lake?

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma dropped a lotus here and Pushkar Lake was formed. A ceremonial bath in the lake is believed to cleanse sins and the ghats see daily religious rituals year-round.

Can I buy rose products in Pushkar?

Yes. Pushkar is India's rose capital. The local bazaars sell rose attar (pure rose essential oil), rose water, rose-based skincare and other botanical products — highly recommended as souvenirs.
