Trip Overview

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, sits at 1,585 metres in the heart of the Kashmir Valley, cradled by the Zabarwan Mountains on the east and the Dal and Nagin lakes to the west. For centuries it has been described in verse and prose as the jewel of India — a city where emperors built gardens for their queens, where mystics composed Sufi poetry, where merchants traded the finest Pashmina and where houseboats float serenely on lotus-covered waters. The crown of any Srinagar visit is Dal Lake — 18 sq km of shimmering water that is simultaneously a neighbourhood, a marketplace, a garden and a mirror for the Himalayan sky. A dawn Shikara ride through the floating vegetable gardens of Nehru Park, past the houseboats of Nagin and across to the Hazratbal Mosque reveals a Srinagar that most tourists never see. The four UNESCO-referenced Mughal Gardens — Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal — built between the 16th and 17th centuries, are masterpieces of Persian horticultural design with terraced lawns, fountain channels and framed views of Dal Lake and the mountains. Shankaracharya Temple, perched atop a 1,000-foot hill above the city, is believed to be one of the oldest temples in Kashmir — visited by Adi Shankaracharya in the 9th century AD. The hilltop offers a panoramic view of the entire Kashmir Valley. The old city of Srinagar — Nowhatta, Bohri Kadal, Habba Kadal — with its ancient wooden mosques, Khanqahs (Sufi shrines) and bustling craft bazaars, brings visitors face to face with a living medieval city. This 4-day package is perfect for first-time Kashmir visitors, families and travellers who prefer a relaxed city-centric itinerary.
