Trip Overview

There is no city on earth quite like Varanasi. Older than history, more alive than legend, this ancient metropolis on the west bank of the Ganges has been a centre of Hindu civilization, philosophy, and devotion for over 3,000 years. Every morning, at first light, thousands of pilgrims descend the broad stone steps of its 87 ghats to bathe in the sacred Ganges, believing that a dip here washes away lifetimes of karma. And every evening, the Dashashwamedh Ghat transforms into a spectacle of fire and prayer with the Ganga Aarti — one of India's most transcendent ritual experiences. This 4-day tour immerses you fully in the rhythms of Kashi. Day one brings the arrival ritual of a pre-dawn boat ride on the Ganges — watching the ghats wake up, the prayers begin, and the morning mist burn off the river in the first light is an experience that permanently alters perspective. Day two takes you through the ancient lanes and sacred temples — the towering gold-sheathed Kashi Vishwanath Temple, the burning Manikarnika Ghat where Hindus have been cremated for millennia, the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, and the vibrant Dashashwamedh market. Day three ventures to Sarnath — just 10 km from Varanasi — where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The Dhamekha Stupa, Mulagandhakuti Vihar, the Sarnath Museum (housing the original Lion Capital of Ashoka — India's national emblem), and the ancient ruins of the first Buddhist monastery make Sarnath one of the most historically significant sites in all of Asia.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Arrive Varanasi — Sunrise on the Ganges

Arrive at Varanasi Airport/Railway Station. Transfer to hotel. If arriving evening — attend the spectacular Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat (7 PM) — a synchronized fire ceremony of priests and oil lamps that draws thousands. If arriving morning — head directly to the ghats for a pre-dawn boat ride on the Ganges. Watch pilgrims bathe, priests pray, and the ancient city wake up from the water. Overnight in Varanasi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Varanasi considered a sacred city?

Varanasi (Kashi/Benaras) is considered India's holiest city — one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) of Hinduism. It is said to be the city of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's eternal home. Hindus believe dying in Varanasi leads to moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth) as Lord Shiva himself is said to whisper the Taraka mantra into the ear of the dying.

What is Ganga Aarti and when does it happen?

The Ganga Aarti is a nightly fire ritual at Dashashwamedh Ghat where a team of priests simultaneously perform a synchronized ceremony with large fire lamps (diyas), incense, conch shells, and chanting — an offering to the River Ganges. It happens every evening at sunset (around 6–7 PM, varies seasonally) and is one of India's most spectacular spiritual experiences.

What are the most important ghats in Varanasi?

The most significant ghats include Dashashwamedh Ghat (Ganga Aarti), Manikarnika Ghat (sacred cremation), Assi Ghat (yoga, philosophy), Harishchandra Ghat (cremation), Kedar Ghat, Tulsi Ghat, and Panchganga Ghat. Varanasi has 87 ghats in total along a 6.5 km stretch of the Ganges.

What is Sarnath and why is it important?

Sarnath is 10 km from Varanasi and is one of the four most sacred sites in Buddhism worldwide. This is where the Buddha delivered his first sermon (Dhammachakkappavattana Sutta) after attaining enlightenment. The Dhamekha Stupa marks the exact spot. The Sarnath Museum houses the original Ashoka Lion Capital — India's national emblem.

What is the best time to visit Varanasi?

October to March is the ideal time — winters bring cool, comfortable weather perfect for ghat walks and boat rides. November–December is excellent with festivals. Diwali and Dev Deepawali (Kartik Purnima) are the most spectacular times to visit, when thousands of earthen diyas illuminate every ghat.

What to buy in Varanasi?

Varanasi is world-famous for Banarasi silk saris and brocades — among the finest textiles in India. Also buy rudraksha beads, sandalwood items, brassware, classical music instruments (sitar, tabla), paan (betel leaf), and thandai (a traditional milk drink). Vishwanath Gali and the Godaulia market are the best shopping areas.

Is Varanasi safe for tourists?

Yes, Varanasi is a major tourist destination with good infrastructure. The main ghat areas are bustling with tourists and pilgrims year-round. Exercise normal caution in crowded markets, use pre-arranged transfers, and engage only licensed guides. Touts are common near the ghats — politely decline and rely on your NorthYatra arrangements.
